What's The Number For 9-1-1 ?!

Our ward always has fun but purposeful activities. This last Saturday was no exception. It had to do with emergency preparedness and went a little something like this....

At 5:30pm our neighbors, Brian and Andra Blackhurst, dropped off at our home a dossier regarding the activity. On the front it read, "Do Not Open Until 6pm". At 6pm, we opened the envelope and in it was a Red, Yellow and Green card stock paper along with instructions. It explained that in the event of an emergency, our block captian was Brian Blackhurst, that the Hamner's home had been designated as a command center for the neighborhood (to be manned by Bishop Rich, John Hamner the communications specialist, Trevor Sharp the emergency preparedness specialist, Rick Moultrie the High Priest Group Leader, Becky Larsen the Relief Society President and me the Elder's Quorum President), and that the McBride's home had been set up as the trauma center. There were also instructions to check in with our block captain in such an event and then I was to report to the command center as soon as possible. Any communication would be via radio on channel 1. The colored paper was to be placed in the front window for the block captain to determine what each household's need was. Red meant there were life threatening injuries or death. Yellow meant serious injuries, but not necessarily life threatening. Green meant all is well.

My little girl was hurt...only in theory, but it was amazing to feel my heart race anyway.

The next page in the package said something to this effect, "At 5:55pm today, a 7.0 earthquake rocked the Wasatch front, hitting American Fork especially hard. The streets are damaged and not fit for traveling, there are power and phone lines down leaving no electricity or phone service (cell or land). Marque is unharmed, but Sarah has lacerations to her arm from broken glass from windows and Leah has excessive bleeding from her head." It then instructed us to react as we would in the event of a real natural disaster following the guidelines given as best as we could. Even though it was only a piece of paper, my heart raced as I thought of Sarah hurt or poor little Leah with "excessive bleeding from the head". I placed the red paper in the window and ran downstairs to fetch our ample first aid kit. Even though it was ample, it was troubling as I realized that a first aid kit had little chance of stopping excessive bleeding from the head of my little girl.

Leah playing while the adults of the block discussed how to better protect their little ones like her.

While Sarah wrapped Leah's head and her own arms, I called on the radio to the trauma center to firefighter, Jeremy McBride. I explained Leah's condition and he urged me to get her to him as quickly as I could. I let the block captain know where we were headed and switched our sign from red to green. I then started the ATV and with Sarah and Leah on the back I raced a few streets over to the trauma center. As we raced there and arrived, I noticed that several in the ward with medical training had made their way to the trauma center to care for the wounded. After making sure my ladies were in good hands, I reported to the command center. Here I mostly listened to communications between the command center and the different block captains who reported the going ons of their block...neighbors crushed under fallen rubble, broken bones, lacerations were all the most common. There were a couple fires...one which was quickly extinguished and the other burned to the ground. We coordinated and directed the excess man power of one block to the other blocks that needed help moving the wounded. I did have to race to a couple areas when the communication broke down to gain a report of how things were progressing.

Sarah with her bandaged arm and Leah with her wrapped head.

Mostly I sat like a bump on the log at the command center and felt somewhat useless. I understand though that there are several who would need to be capable of manning the command center in the event that another was absent or hurt. It was neat to see how some were prepared and others were not. As we checked off house after house until all were accounted for, it hit home where we were weak and where we were strong. The activity did not go on without problems, but that was indeed the activity. It was intended to be a learning activity where we learned the importance of emergency preparedness and gain the confidence of having a plan.

Brian Blackhurst going over what items should be in a 72 hour kit.

Each of the blocks separated after the drill was called off and met to discuss what went well and what went wrong. We discussed the need for having or updating 72 hour kits for everyone and shared ideas and thoughts. We then met again as an entire ward to have a similar discussion. As was the food preparedness activity in February of last year, this proved to be most eye opening. We are prepared more now than ever before with even more preparation needed. They say the "big one" is inevitable so we must be prepared. I hope it never happens, but I even more so hope that I am prepared for my family if it does. This means I need to get CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Training, re-certify with the Red Cross and more.
Bishop Rich and Andra Blackhurst directing a discussion afterwards.

Of course, what would a ward activity be without refreshments. I didn't get any because I got lasso'ed into taking every kid in the neighborhood for ATV rides. I had fun and they did too, but it sounds like I may have irked a few parents. Oops! Well, as usual, it was a great success and hats go off to the Blackhursts, Richs, Hamners, Sharps and McBrides for all their preparation in making our neighborhood safer and better prepared for a natural disaster.

It's a Love/Hate Relationship

Winter. Oh, how I love thee!? Winter. Oh, how I despise thee?!

One of the things I love about living in Utah is the distinct changing of the seasons. You have Spring, Summer, Fall and of course Winter...you know...best snow on Earth! I have always loved Winter. Everything is beautiful and appears clean after a fresh snowfall. Of course, the three greatest holidays fall in Winter which help to make the season merry. I know, I know. Technically, Thanksgiving is a Fall holiday, but in Utah the weather has already turned from Fall to Winter. I really do enjoy and love Winter. However...

I hate and loathe Winter! There is not a worse time for me than Winter time. When the air turns cold and crisp for days and weeks on end, my body falls apart. Some may not know, but I have a few health problems; psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. And these three diseases have had war declared upon them by Old Mother Winter. All three of these diseases are auto-immune diseases which basically means my immune system is somewhat ultra active, but highly focused on one thing. For instance my skin. If I cut myself, I heal almost as fast as Wolverine. Unfortunately, the rest of me is vulnerable. It is like having 8 corner backs on a football team, but they all cover the same receiver! I get scored on every time! This basically means, I spend most of Winter sick. To make matters worse, the injections I take twice a week further weaken my immune system which means I have to decide to become further vulnerable or not take them in times of illness in an effort to give my immune system a fighting chance! So, as I enter the Christmas week, I am still coughing from my bout with illness in early October and am now coming down with a sore throat all the while having battled a couple colds in the meantime. On top of that, my joints ache! My feet, my ankles, my knees, my lower back and my hands.

Now, I don't want to sound like a sad old man who does nothing but complain. The truth of the matter is that worse things happen to better people. Sarah's cousin, Jenteal, has a much more sever case of Rheumatoid Arthritis than I do and has had it for quite some time longer than me. She never complains. I look back now on days that Jenteal would go skiing without even a peep of discomfort. I whine like a baby when I have to tie my shoes! It just goes to show that attitude is a difference maker. I need to be more like Jenteal. BTW, Jenteal and her husband just had a little girl. I am not sure, but I believe they named her Marissa but have chosen to call her Marquessa. The worse is when the cold air makes my skin so dry and painful. It feels like someone dipped me in gasoline and tossed on a match! I don't know why I am opening up about this. I guess I just wanted to blog about this for some reason. The good thing is that I have an extremely high tolerance level to pain. I am unsure if I was born with it or if it comes from dealing with it for so long.

So, every fall with the turning of the leaves, I smile knowing that Winter soon cometh and brings with it the beauty of snow and the holidays. I then grimace in pain at the thought of it still. Again, I know that worse things happen to far better people. This truly was not a sympathy getter, I just wanted to blog about it. Merry Christmas!

SUCK A DUCK!!!

What an awful week. Last week was great with a fantastic end to a fun trip in So Cal. This week started out tough with coming home to a home that needed to be put back together due to painting while we were gone. That would not be so bad, except that I was illin' big time. Then Leah got sick which required so much time and attention too, not to mention pain and anguish to see my little girl not feeling so hot. Then Sarah got sick, so now we both had to take turns not sleeping to care for Leah. Work was busy. USC lost to an amazing Oregon Duck team. To top it all off, I finally got the chance to make it up to the church building tonight at 10pm only to find out that I can't catch up because the computer is toast! This has been one of the most stressful and worst weeks of my life! Man, did I pick an awful week to quit drinking soda! There were a couple bright spots...because we were all sick I didn't have to dress up for Halloween and I absolutely loved how cuddly and loving Leah was when she was sick. It was so fun...still I would rather she was not sick...but seriously, it was great!

A Perfect 10! Well, Maybe 9 1/2!

The past two months I have not been feeling so hot. I have been feeling extremely exhausted, lightheaded, sore, numb in areas, short-breathed, etc. Anyone who knows me, knows I hate going to the doctor. I am a positive person, but still tend to have a deep fear for extremely bad news from those professionals that call their work "practice". I have seen too many people receive bad news and then give up as a result. It may not make sense to many, but I would almost rather not know! Things are a little different when you have a beautiful wife and a precious daughter. I broke down and visited the doctor. I explained my ails. His verdict, "lose weight". Wow! What a surprise! After testing, it appears my ticker is in great shape. My cholesterol is perfect, my blood sugar is perfect and my blood pressure is, if anything, approaching the side of low. For a guy my size, the doctor is impressed with how I check out. With that said, I still need to lose weight. I was expecting bad news from The Doc, but apparently this is just a result of my psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis...lose weight and live with it. He did suggest I begin taking that mild chemo to combat the joint pain, but after already experiencing months of nauseousness, I passed. So, I guess all things considered, I fall barely short of a perfect 10! Darn fat!

I Think I Must Be Losing My Mind!!!!

"They're Coming To Take Me Away!"
by: Dr. Demento

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa
To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be
happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and
they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!!!

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa,
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the happy home. With trees and flowers and chirping birds
and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and
toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!

Lately I think I must be losing my mind! Today, I had lunch which was provided at work. After lunch, I hopped in the Jeep and headed toward Highland to the Smith's to get a cake for a co-worker's birthday. I walked in, perused the lunch counter, decided I was not hungry and decided to leave empty handed! DURH! I already had lunch! I was not there to eat, I was there to get a cake! I drove back to the office, appreciative for the opportunity to enjoy the nice weather in my topless Jeep. It was not until about thirty minutes later that I realized what an idiot I was and that I had entirely forgotten why I left in the first place! Luckily, I was able to get someone else to help me out and pick up a cake. Seriously, I think I must be losing my mind! I don't know, but it seems like I have been less alert ever since I got off of my eating and exercising regiment. I really need to get my head back into the game of life! Either that or file for social security due to mental illness!

American Fork Biggest Loser Update

Today was the first weigh in (other than registration) for the American Fork's Steel Day's Biggest Loser contest.  I am pleased to report that I have lost 8.66% after 5 weeks.  This puts me in third place, out of those that weighed in.  I learned that there were roughly 150 participants.  After this weigh in, they will narrow the field to the 50 with the highest percentage of weight lost.  I am fairly sure I will end up in the top 5 and should safely proceed to the next round.  I am happy with that, however, my goal was to be at 10% lost by today.  I have fallen short a couple different times and have not been diligent in my physical activity.  This is good news though.  If I have seen these results without diligence in exercise, imagine the results if I can find the will power to insert that element.

Thank you all for your support.  I have such loving family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.  Your support is priceless to me in this effort.  I need to push forward with a strengthened commitment and get to 240!  With your words of encouragement, I am sure I will.

American Fork Biggest Loser Update

Well, three and a half weeks down in the American Fork Biggest Loser contest with one and a half weeks until the first elimination weigh in, and I am down 25 lbs.  I am happy with the results so far and am excited for the continued success.  I have had amazing support.  Sarah has been amazing and has made my lunch Monday through Friday.  My friends have been so helpful with encouraging words and motivating comments.  My friend, Jinky even created a support group on facebook for me! Thanks to everyone!  Some have made comments expressing concerns that I am not getting enough to eat.  What they may not be aware of is that my trainer does not make me count calories of most fruits and vegetables.  With that said, I am still falling short of my target calories on a daily basis.  I eat several times a day and very rarely do I feel hungry.  I can probably count on one hand the times I have felt hungry the last three weeks.  The nice thing about not hitting my calories goal is that occasionally I will have a bite size candy bar or a bite of something I should not have.  I never record it, and it is not anything worth recording.  I think a bite size candy bar has 42 calories, so it gives me that bit of a reward without much of a consequence.  I have resumed my injections and am already feeling better.  Last night when I used the treadmill I jogged at 4 mph on a 7 incline and it killed the arthritis in my back.  I wholly expected to feel it today, but I didn't.  Well, I need to go so I can hit the treadmill again.  Again, thanks for the support!  You are all too good to me.

The Happiest Place On Earth

You may have been led to believe that Disneyland is the "Happiest Place on Earth", but a recent gallup pole shows that Utah is. The AP reports: "Looking for happiness - It's family-friendly communities for some, tropical paradise or the rugged West for others. A survey of Americans' well-being, conducted by Gallup in partnership with Healthways and America's Health Insurance Plans, gives high marks to Utah, which boasts lots of outdoor recreation for it's youthful population." Apparently West Virginia is the saddest place in the Union. I LOVE UTAH!

Q Is A Big Loser!

As many of you know, I have registered with the American Fork Steel Days Biggest Loser Contest.  I really don't care if I win or not, but I thought it would be a good motivator.  It has been a few days so far and so far so good.  I have been tempted the last day to drink a soda or eat food I know I shouldn't eat.  I am worried if I am already feeling this temptation now, will I have the will power to complete the journey?

When I began the Biggest Loser contest, I started a blog so that I can track what steps I take along the way and analyze what works and what doesn't work.  Initially, I made that blog private due to the fact that I am embarrassed of my big fat ass!  At this point, I feel the more people I have supporting me and watching me, the more pressure I will feel to stick with it and not look like a loser in the other sense!  Anyway.  I don't know if that made sense or not, but here is the blog anyway.  Please feel free to leave comments, I am depending on you all to fuel the motivational fire I need to finish the race.

Myth Dispelled?

I have often heard that a glass of wine a day is good for you.  I have never had any heartburn with this comment.  I don't drink, but it makes sense to me that all things in moderation have the possibility of being beneficial.  Of course, most that drink, indulge more than just one glass.  I watched a short blurb on Good Morning America this morning that dispels this myth...for women.  Men metabolize alcohol differently than women.  Apparently any alcohol consumption in women increases their chance of cancer significantly.  I guess significantly would depend on how much you like alcohol and how much you dislike cancer, but none the less, women who consume alcohol are at higher risk of getting cancer, specifically, breast, rectal and liver cancers.

1.3 million women in Britain (whose drinking habits are parallel with those of American women) were involved in this research.  The average woman drank one glass of alcohol a day.  Of the population of Britain, 13% of breast, rectal and liver cancers in women were caused by alcohol consumption.  The study does not dispel the fact that a glass of wine a day (mainly due to the antioxidants found in grapes) is good for your heart and a glass of dark liquor a day is good for your mind, but researchers follow those discoveries with the statement that EVERYTHING you put in your body will have their positive and negative effects.

Biggest Loser!

American Fork has it's annual Steel Days every year in July.  This includes, among other things, a carnival, parade, musical events, concerts, fireworks, and several contests.  This year they are adding "Steel Days Biggest Loser" contest.  The entry fee is $20, and the first weigh in is February 28th.  There will be five subsequent weigh-ins with the final weigh-in being at Art Dye park the day of the big show.  The prize money will not even cover the cost of my trainer, but we know it is not about the money anyway!  What do you think?  Should I do it?  Chime in and let me know what you think.  If I do it, I am willing to accept sponsorships for a small fee.  Your company logo will be placed proudly on my 3x tee shirt, but as I lose weight and the shirt size decreases, the cost of advertising and sponsorship will go up.  Please speak up and vote Yes or No!

Leaving the Land of Smog for the Land of Smog

Whenever I go home to So Cal, I miss it....that is until I can't breath or get stuck in traffic!  The traffic is ridiculous and I can't stand the smog!  I never thought I would say this, but I am actually looking forward to breathing the cleaner air of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire!  While the Wasatch front is smack dab in the middle of one of the worst inversions I have ever seen, I will be only slightly gagging on the air of So Cal.  The last week, the air has been so thick here that you can chew it!  It smells bad, is ugly and apparently is the equivalent of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.  It is so bad, many of our Latino brothers and sisters are longing for Mexico City!  Seriously, get me out of here!  Hopefully while we are gone visiting family, baptizing Madyson, eating at Cris and Pitt's, and hanging at Mickey Mouse's house with the Ashbys and Andersons, you all will get hit with a big snow or rain storm and beat down this filth!  Until then, cough, cough, Peace out, cough, cough!

Gratitude

Life's been so good to me
Has it been good to you
Has it been everything
That you've expected it to be
Was it as good for you
As it was good for me
And was it everything
That it was all set up to be
~ Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo

Gratitude! What an important thing to possess. I recently tried to communicate this to my young men on Sunday. I believe gratitude to be the founding root of all things good. It is my opinion that a person who has gratitude, also will discover they have happiness, success and love. Many are compelled to gratitude, typically after they lose something. It is easy to be grateful for what you had at a later date when you no longer have it. I find the key to happiness, success and love is to find gratitude for every little thing Heavenly Father has blessed us with before it is too late.

Here are a few ways I have learned to show my gratitude. Maybe they will help you:
  • Write something you are grateful for at the end of every journal entry
  • Send a thank you card once a week to someone who has helped you, influenced you or otherwise touched your life.
  • Make genuine "Thank You"s a part of your every day vocabulary.
  • Blog about it!
  • Most important - Be kind to others and treat them with graciousness.

I am a very grateful person. I see greed and selfishness everywhere I look and it is bothersome. It is worrisome to find myself caught up in these sins from time to time, but I am grateful I am firmly rooted in my thankfulness for what I have; for my ability to recognize that which is ultimately important and place those things first in my list of blessings. I am happy that my parents have raised me to recognize blessings and to express outwardly my gratitude for these things. I am happy my Heavenly Father blessed me with a natural ability to understand that all good things come from Him and that I am nothing without His hand in my life.

There are so many things to be grateful for and for that reason I love Thanksgiving and the holidays. It is a time when we are encouraged to look within for those things that we are truly blessed with; to recognize and prioritize those blessings we have been given. Elder Kikuchi once told me that if I ever find myself in a position where I didn't feel like praying, all I need to do is simply kneel and begin to itemize my blessings. It is impossible to do without humbling your soul and placing you in a state of gratitude and love for what He has given you. I know this from experience. I have been blessed with a loving Heavenly Father who gives me everything I need and more. He has given me the greatest blessing in His Son, Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice.

I am grateful for my wife, Sarah. She may not be perfect, but she is perfect for me. I could not want anyone else in my life. I am grateful for Leah. She is truly a special spirit and this will be proved time and time again in her life. I already feel it. She has made me so happy. I am thankful for Caitlin. Caitlin is Sarah and my angel. She may never understand just how grateful we are for her. I am grateful for a perfect Mother and a loving Father. They have made me what I am today. I am grateful for my brothers who are so different from me and each other, yet we are perfect together. I am thankful they are all coming for Thanksgiving. I am thankful for my Grandfather Bliss. I am thankful for my Grandmother Bliss-Baldwin and Brewer. I am grateful for my nieces and nephews. I am thankful for my entire family, in-laws included. I have been blessed with a strong family support system. At times I may act independent like they are not needed, but they are.

I am so blessed with some of the best and most amazing friends, past and present, a guy could ever want. I am thankful for a job that allows me to support my family comfortably. I am grateful for my boss and the other owners of the company. If it were not for Steve, Phil, Len and Boyd, I would have left the company and industry years ago. I am thankful for the best ward ever with such an amazing Bishop. I am grateful to live in the friendliest neighborhood to ever exist. The ward and neighborhood I live in have been so supportive in all our needs. Simply amazing. I am thankful for my young men and their unique personalities.

Man, this list can go on and on. I am thankful for the church, almost all music, football, mountains, the ocean, technology, learning, thumbs, food, soda, milk, history, my mission, all my experiences and believe it or not...my health issues. I am thankful for my slippa's, surf culture, my heritage, the travel I have done and will still do, I am thankful for cars, yardwork, grass, etc. I am so blessed. So, so, so blessed. I simply do not know how to express it. I do my best and won't stop trying. That is all I can do. That is all that is expected of me. Where much is given, much is required. I truly have been given much.

Quest For Perfection Complete

Today we took Leah to her first Dr.'s appointment with Dr. Mumford at Utah Valley Pediatrics. We have to thank everyone there. Brenda, our neighbor, works for Dr. Mumford at this office and she has shared our experience with everyone there. She warned us last night that they have all seen the blog and feel like they know us before having met us. This was truly the case. When we came in to the office, everyone that worked there was so anxious to see or hold Leah. They all told us how happy they were for us and how special Leah is. We felt very welcomed there. Thank you all (I know you are going to read this).

Dr. Scott Mumford was also happy to see Leah. Brenda has spoken of us to him often as well. I had golfed with Scott once and I am sure we talked about adoption. The good Dr. said that Leah was 100% the perfect baby! We already thought so, but as Sarah said, now we have it in writing from a qualified professional! We need to take her back in a week. I believe Leah will grow to love going to that office while most kids dread the trip to the doctor's.

It's Good To Be Me!

While life does send a few blows my way from time to time.  It is still good to be me.  I have an amazing and beautiful wife, a loving family and so many great friends.  I live in the greatest ward and neighborhood and in a beautiful part of the country.  I have the greatest calling and work with an amazing group of young men.  I am employed by a strong company, have bosses that are good men, manage a team of employees I call friends, and I like my job.  I enjoy relatively good health.  The list goes on and on.  Today I realized all this early in the day.  I still had hopes the day could get better...and it did!

It started by BYU slaughtering UCL-Lame.  59-0!  The worst drumming the Bruins have had since losing to THE University of Southern California in 1929 by the score of 76-0!  Next Notre Dame beat Michigan 35-17.  I am still not impressed with Notre Dame and think that Charlie Weis is overpaid and over-rated.  The cap to the day was USC's continued domination of The Big Ten and ranked opponents by beating the consistently over ranked Buckeyes from Ohio, 35-3.  What a great display of solid ball!

Like I said, it is SO good to be me.  I am truly blessed!
